As Mayor I’m proud to lead my fellow councillors in our commitment to maintaining and preserving our community facilities.

Council currently has three design projects underway that will see key community assets preserved for generations to come. These projects are all funded by the 2023-2024 Council Budget.

First up, a tender will be advertised shortly to appoint a heritage architect, to document the required conservation works and upgrades needed to bring the Princes Park Grandstand to contemporary standards.

Second is a tender that’s about to be awarded for the design and documentation for renewal of the existing roof at the Maryborough Sports and Leisure Centre.

Design projects are important as they allow us to apply for funding when grant opportunities become available, using reliable cost estimates and detailing what is required.

The third project to be awarded soon is to fully document and assess the Carisbrook, Dunolly and Talbot Community Halls so they are also construction ready.

Like all our community halls, we know the Carisbrook Town Hall is highly valued by its community. These halls are often the soul of the town by fostering community cohesion. It’s where people come together to meet, socialise, and build connections.

Carisbrook’s was built by the Borough in 1859 and extended in 1892. Initially the Town Hall and Corn Exchange with small rooms on either side. Other uses have included: Telegraph/Post Office, Mechanics Institute, free Library, as well as home of the Carisbrook Brass Band.

In 2021 some improvements were made using the Federal Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure program, mainly to repair the roof.

I can’t wait to see works completed on these assets in the (hopefully) not too distant future.
