The December Central Goldfields Art Gallery Art Talk will take a deep dive into the art and design of masterpieces in miniature with an illustrated talk by local Alex Stoneman OAM who will discuss all things postage stamps.

Titled Masterpieces in Miniature: Art and Design in Postage Stamps, Mr Stoneman said this Art Talk will discuss illustrations of stamps issued by postal authorities from around the world that have reproduced works of famous artists and other artistic commissions.

“Postage stamps have been a feature of life around the world since the issue of the ‘Penny Black’ in Great Britain in 1840.

“There are so many fascinating insights into the design process involved in the production of these masterpieces in miniature which I will be sharing on the day.”

Mr Stoneman has a distinguished career with the Victorian Education Department and is a long-term and much respected tutor with Maryborough U3A.

Central Goldfields Shire Mayor Cr Grace La Vella encouraged everyone to head along to Maryborough Resource Centre on December 7 for this Art Talk.

“Mr Stoneman has collected and displayed stamps for over sixty years and was presented with an Award of Merit for his contribution to philately in Victoria.

“This Art Talk is not to be missed. It’s an opportunity to gain some intriguing insights into what used to be such a common household item.”
