Procurement policy is a very important governance item and Council will be reviewing its procurement policy as per the requirements of the Local Government Act due by 31 December 2021.

All councils understandably want to see more contracts go to local businesses. However, there are many other factors which are relevant to consider in procurement policy.

Council must meet the requirements of the Local Government Act to promote open and fair competition and to provide value for money. This enables us to get the best outcomes for the money we spend for our Community. Sometimes we partner with neighbouring councils in tenders to get better value through a larger supply arrangement.

A tender awarded to a business outside our Shire often results in some local employment and upskilling of local employees in new technologies or processes and networks. In addition we can expect to see more consortiums in tenders with businesses sticking to its core capability. This leads to knowledge transfer and future opportunities.

Where external providers win tenders, their employees often stay in our Shire while working and support our local economy.

There is a massive amount of work currently in the pipeline. Council has over $20m of capital projects. There is strong growth in other sectors within the Shire. Simply sourcing available providers is a growing challenge.

Council wants to help local businesses to win Council work. Please consider our “Doing Business with Council”( online) this Friday 12th November at 7.30am.

Please register ASAP on our website to receive the Zoom link for the event. If you do not have access to a computer or the internet, please contact Council’s Economic Development Officer Brian Gould on 0419 762 793 or email brian.gould@cgoldshire.vic.gov.au
