WINTER OPERATIONS

The leafy parklands and streets we all enjoy over summer take considerable work to maintain, making autumn a busy time of year for our Open Spaces team.
A reminder to keep watch for crews pruning trees along our streets and to follow any road and path signage for everyone’s safety. Pruning keeps trees healthy and neat, while keeping street parking and footpaths easy to use.
Street sweepers are also on the move in our towns, picking up leaves from gutters and roads to improve driving conditions and prevent drainage problems over winter. Mini sweepers will repeatedly return to parks and footpaths too, to make them less slippery.
New trees

The cooler months are the ideal time for new tree plantings, which will commence in coming weeks.
Earlier this year we asked residents where they would like additional shade, and we received over one hundred requests.
The tree stock is now delivered, and once the busy autumn maintenance period slows, we can start planting. The new trees will take between three and five years to become established, under the watchful eyes of our Open Spaces team.
New footpath

Our Roads and Works team replaced a 120 metre section of asphalt footpath this week, along a section of Gladstone Street between Franklin and Field streets.
Tree roots had caused damage to the path, so both have been removed and a new concrete section installed. As a shared pathway, it is now 2 metres wide.
We’ll let you know about replacement trees in coming weeks.
KEEP IT CLEAN
Our Waste Services team would like to remind users of our optional green waste service that not everything that is green goes into the green bin!
Beer bottles, hoses, plant pots, clothing – among a vast variety of objects being extracted at our Carisbrook Transfer Station processing plant, should be disposed of in general rubbish or recycling bins instead.

Contamination in loads of green waste has to be picked out by hand before this valuable and much sought after resource can start being processed into high quality, enriched compost.
To learn more visit: www.centralgoldfields.vic.gov.au/sorted
Green waste is collected on the first and third Friday each month. The next collection will be Friday 6 June.
ENERGY SAVINGS

Ever wondered why your home still feels cold in winter, even with the heater running? The culprit could be hidden draughts.
Whether you’re a homeowner or a renter, our next Home Energy Empowerment event, “A Masterclass on Draught-Proofing” will equip you with practical strategies to make your home work smarter, not harder.
The lunch’n’learn online session starts from 12.30pm to 1.15pm this Monday 2 June. There will be a live screening at Dunolly and District Neighbourhood Centre at 18 Havelock Street or you can register to join live.
