WINNERS!
The “Truth Telling, Healing and Creating for Community on Djaara Country” project has been awarded the 2025 LGPro Award for Excellence in the First Nations Community Partnership category.
The Central Goldfields Shire Council and DJAARA partnership took the prize out from other very worthy nominees, including Greater Bendigo City Council and Ballarat City Council.
The project featured the digital animation at our Visitor Centre about the gold rush and its impact on our First Nations people, and the garingilang gatjin wii (water and fire garden) recently completed next to the Central Goldfields Art Gallery.
The award was presented at the LGPro Annual Dinner in Melbourne. For further information visit:

SIGNS OF THE TIMES
To support our community in the transition to a statewide standard waste collection system in 2027, new signs are being installed on public bins and collection trucks.
In partnership with our Facilities and Maintenance crew, our Healthy Environments team is also rolling out A-frame billboard signage in towns across our Shire.
The signs explain the different streams of recycling and how to improve the efficiency of our bin waste collection. The cost of processing waste is considerably reduced when separated correctly by residents.
The State Government changes will ensure that bins across the state are all the same colour, and that glass is collected separately where the new four-bin system is rolled out.

ROADS AHEAD
Four Corners
Our Roads and Works team have commenced work at the corner of Alma and Brougham streets in Maryborough. The upgrade is the next stage of the Victorian Government’s Safe Local Roads and Streets program, which is being delivered in partnership with the Traffic Accident Commission.
Over coming months, a series of four intersections will be improved, also including the corners of:
- Brougham and Burke streets (commencing next week)
- Napier and Hilton streets
- Kars and High streets
The four intersections will first have new footpaths and gutters installed, followed by new traffic islands. The roadways will then be refurbished with asphalt at all corners on the same day. We’ll let you know when the date is confirmed.
For everyone’s safety, please observe reduced speed limits and the directions from our traffic controllers – especially in foggy conditions. For further information on the safety upgrade plan, visit:

- Archdale-Dunolly Road (Bealiba-South to Avoca-Bealiba roads) 5.4km

- Mount Hooghly Road (Dunolly-Avoca to Norwood roads ) 7.9km

LOCAL LAWS
In late 2023 we asked the community how we should draft our new local laws, which require updating every ten years. We met with communities around our Shire and encouraged feedback, paying particular attention to common complaints and requests we receive.
Since then, we have drafted the Local Law 2025 with support from our legal advisor, incorporating some new laws and clarifying some existing laws.
You can now review the Draft Local Law 2025 and see a list of the changes, then comment by visiting:
