Central Goldfields Shire Council has adopted its renewed Domestic Animal Management Plan, outlining a strategic framework to balance community safety, animal welfare and responsible pet ownership over the next four years.

The plan was developed following extensive community engagement across two consultation phases.

This process began with targeted community pop-ups in Maryborough, Dunolly, and Talbot in July 2025, followed by a public feedback period on the draft plan in April 2026.

Ninety community members shared their views through surveys and in-person consultations, directly shaping the priority actions of the final document.

Key changes in the 2026-29 strategy reflect strong public support for increased pet confinement and control.

Council has committed to investigate and implement a 24-hour cat curfew and dog on-leash order requirements in public spaces.

The plan drives key operational and service improvements including online monitoring to identify illegal or non-compliant backyard breeding operations.

Thanks are extended to everyone who participated in the community engagement.
