Maryborough Community Garden to host hands-on Home Vegetable Gardening
Published on 18 May 2026
Central Goldfields Shire residents have the chance to dig in and grow their own food as part of a practical, beginner-friendly workshop led by the Maryborough Community Garden.
The ‘Dig in! How to Start Your Vegetable Garden’ workshop will be held on Sunday 24 May, 10am to 12noon at the Mill House, 88-90 Burke Street, Maryborough.
The free workshop stems from a partnership between the Victorian Government’s Healthy Loddon Campaspe program, Maryborough Community Garden and Council.
Designed for beginners and those looking to build their confidence and skills, the free workshop will cover the basics of starting a home vegetable garden. Attendees will receive guidance on choosing the best location for a garden, improving soil quality, selecting suitable vegetables for the season, and understanding planting timelines for optimal growth.
A highlight of the workshop is the hands-on planting activity, where participants will sow their own seedlings during the session. These will be cared for at the garden and ready for collection a few weeks later, giving attendees a head start on their home gardening journey.
Central Goldfields Shire Mayor Cr Ben Green said growing your own food is one of the simplest and most rewarding ways to support your health and wellbeing.
“This workshop gives people the confidence to get started, connect with others and learn practical skills they can use at home.
“It’s a great example of how local partnerships can make healthy living more accessible for everyone in our community.”
Healthy Loddon Campaspe’s Alysha Gourley highlighted the broader benefits of the initiative.
“This workshop is a fantastic opportunity for people to build confidence in growing their own food. Not only does gardening support physical and mental wellbeing, but it also helps people connect with their local community and access fresh, nutritious produce at home.”
All participants will be provided with morning tea as well as a small gardening pack to support their gardening at home.
The workshop forms part of ongoing efforts in the region to promote healthy lifestyles, sustainable living, and community connection, making gardening accessible to people of all ages and experience levels.
Community members interested in learning how to grow their own food and enjoy the benefits of gardening are encouraged to attend this event.
