Construction of the new netball court at JH Hedges Memorial Oval in Maryborough is now underway, following the awarding of the construction tender to a local contractor.

Maffescioni Constructions has been appointed to deliver the new court, with the contract for the installation of new lighting infrastructure to be awarded shortly.

The $450,000 upgrade is fully funded by the Victorian Government.

The project will deliver improved facilities for netball in the Central Goldfields Shire, providing welcome news for the Maryborough Giants Football Netball Club and other clubs across the Maryborough Castlemaine District Football Netball League.

The upgrade will deliver:

  • A new and improved court surface
  • Installation of lighting compliant with training standards
  • Courtside player shelters
  • Construction of retaining wall
  • Upgrades to the fenceline behind the court

The new netball court is expected to be complete by the end of June – with lighting installation to follow later.

Central Goldfields Shire Mayor Cr Ben Green said it was fantastic to see the contract awarded, allowing works to get underway as soon as possible so that netball can return to Hedges Oval as soon as possible.

“It's terrific to have a local contractor delivering this important piece of community sports infrastructure.

“This upgrade is a credit to the strong advocacy of the Maryborough Giants Football Netball Club and the dedicated work of Council staff. We’re also grateful to Martha Haylett and the Victorian Government for their significant investment in making this project a reality.”

“We also acknowledge and thank the Maryborough Giants Football Netball Club for their patience. We understand that having your netball court rebuilt during the season presents challenges, and we appreciate your cooperation.

“Despite the disruption, we know this will be a transformational project for the Giants. It will provide a safe, high‑quality playing surface that supports participation, encourages growth, and strengthens junior development.”
