Central Goldfields Shire will offer green waste disposal for FREE at its Carisbrook, Talbot and Dunolly transfer stations from Friday 31 October to Tuesday 11 November, 2025 to support residents to be fire ready.

The initiative supports the CFA’s “Get Fire Ready” campaign which urges Victorians to prepare, understand their fire risk, develop a fire plan and know where to access emergency information.

Central Goldfields Shire Mayor Cr Grace La Vella said it was imperative for everyone in the community to start preparing for the upcoming fire season.

“It’s important that we take a whole-of-community approach to protecting our community from fire – Council, CFA, state authorities and landowners – we all have a part to play and the time to start is now before the weather gets too hot.

“We know that the unseasonal low rainfall and dry conditions across our municipality means our fire risk will be heightened this summer.

“Our Operations team have commenced work on our fuel reduction program with tree trimming around powerlines and weed spraying and soon extensive slashing of all Council roadside and open grassed areas will commence.

“Under State Government legislation, Council must also conduct fire hazard inspections on private property.

“Between November and April each year, Council’s Municipal Fire Prevention Officer (MFPO) inspects properties within our Shire to ensure all properties have been maintained to minimise fire risk.

“Within the Fire Danger Period, properties identified as being high fire risk will be issued with a Fire Prevention Notice to carry out works on their property by a specific date. If the landholder fails to comply, we will appoint a contractor to complete the works and invoice the landowner for the costs and possibly issue fines.”

Residents are encouraged to make the most of free green waste disposal and prepare their surrounds by:

  • Clearing undergrowth, bark and fallen branches
  • Moving firewood and other combustibles away from their home
  • Cleaning out gutters and drains
  • Pruning low branches near buildings and fence lines
  • keeping grass and weeds low

***Our optional green waste service bins are collected on the first and third Fridays of the month. This year, there are five Fridays in October, and we will also collect green waste bins on Friday 31 October, to help clean up spring growth.
