COOL WINNERS

cool.spaces.2.jpg

Maryborough Education Centre students shone bright in the Cool Spaces Logo Design Competition, taking out three awards. Over 200 school students across our Shire took part in the competition.

Pictured from left to right: MEC Year 10 student Will (commended), winner MEC Year 7 Art and Design student Davi, Mayor Grace La Vella and MEC Year 7 student Will (commended). Davi's winning logo will be used to identify Cool Space sites from this summer, with an official launch on December 3.

Two students from Dunolly Primary School will also receive awards of commendation.

The competition was held to engage students in learning about heat health and to unearth an outstanding logo to brand Cool Spaces, which will be set up this summer to provide places people can go to keep cool.  At a minimum they offer air conditioning, comfy seating, drinking water, toilets and phone charging at no charge.

A big thank you to everyone who took part and the exceptional quality of their entries.

VOICE FOR FARMERS

DroughtRoundTable.jpg

We hosted a roundtable with local farmers and government officials last week to discuss issues associated with ongoing dry conditions across the region.

Rural Assistance Commissioner, Peter Tuohey (pictured with Central Goldfields Shire CEO Peter Harriot), and officials from Agriculture Victoria and North Central CMA attended the roundtable, along with more than 15 local farmers and rural business owners.

Mayor Cr Grace La Vella wrote to Agriculture Minister, Ros Spence, in August, seeking additional government support to match what’s available in Pyrenees Shire.

These measures include a rate reduction of up to 40% and household assistance grants of $1,000.

CHRISTMAS TIME

Over the past week our Open Spaces crew has been installing Christmas trees across our Shire.

Christmas cheer is starting a few weeks earlier this year so students from across Australia arriving in town for Energy Breakthrough can share in the excitement.

KEEP IT CLEAN

Our transfer stations are offering green waste disposal without charge (up to 3 cubic metres per vehicle) until Tuesday 11 November.

The initiative supports the CFA’s “Get Fire Ready” campaign which urges Victorians to prepare, understand their fire risk and reduce fuel loads on their properties in the lead up to the Fire Danger Period declaration on 17 November.

Those using the service are reminded to avoid contamination of green waste, which we process into quality compost at our Carisbrook facility.

Transfer station opening hours as follows:

  • Carisbrook – Monday, Tuesday, Friday from 10am to 4.30pm; Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 4pm; open Melbourne Cup Day, Tuesday 4 November 10am to 4.30pm
  • Talbot – Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday from 9am to 1pm
  • Dunolly - Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday from 9am to 1pm

A reminder that our transfer station in Bealiba does not currently collect green waste.
