Central Goldfields Shire Council is helping residents prepare for the upcoming fire season by offering up to 3m³ of FREE green waste disposal at the Carisbrook, Talbot and Dunolly transfer stations.

Available from Monday 2 November to Sunday 8 November 2026, the initiative gives residents an opportunity to clear green waste and reduce potential fire hazards around their properties.

The initiative supports the CFA’s Get Fire Ready campaign, which encourages Victorians to understand their fire risk, prepare their properties, develop a fire plan and know where to access emergency information.

Residents are urged to take steps now to prepare their properties and help reduce the risk of fire ahead of summer.

Fire preparedness is a shared responsibility, requiring Council, the CFA, emergency services and landowners to work together to keep the community safe. The best time to act is before temperatures rise.

Council’s Operations team has already begun seasonal fuel reduction works, including trimming trees around powerlines and spraying weeds, with extensive slashing of roadside areas and Council-managed open grassed spaces to follow.

Council also has a legislative responsibility to inspect private properties for potential fire hazards. From November through to April, Council’s Fire Prevention Officers will assess properties across the Shire to ensure appropriate measures are in place to minimise fire risk.

Landowners whose properties are identified as posing a high fire risk may receive a Fire Prevention Notice requiring specific works to be completed by a nominated deadline.

If the required works are not carried out, Council can arrange for a contractor to undertake them and recover the costs from the landowner. Anyone who fails to comply with a Fire Prevention Notice may also face a fine of $2,091.

Residents are encouraged to act early, maintain their properties and do their part to help protect the community this fire season.

Residents can prepare their properties by:

  • Clearing undergrowth, bark and fallen branches.
  • Moving firewood and other combustible materials away from the home.
  • Cleaning gutters and drains.
  • Pruning low branches near buildings and fence lines.
  • Keeping grass and weeds low.
