Central Goldfields Shire Council is seeking support from State Election parties and candidates to repair and restore the historic Maryborough Town Hall.

It’s estimated that $10 million is needed to bring the heritage building up to modern standards.

The hall was built in 1887-88. It was designed by George Johnson, who also designed the Collingwood, Northcote, and North Melbourne Town Halls.

Mayor Ben Green said the Town Hall is recognised for its architectural and historical significance to the State of Victoria.

“There are significant opportunities to upgrade the Town Hall so that it is more widely used and open more often to the community and the broader public,” Cr Green said.

“While preserving the heritage charm, we need modern spaces for civic events, functions and performing arts.”

Cr Green said Council can’t afford to refurbish the hall without government support.

Local residents have formed a Friends of the Maryborough Town Hall group, with a vision to see it revived as a vibrant, cultural hub.

Spokesperson Michele Forbes said they want to see this “beautiful historic building restored to its former glory”.

“With upgraded stage requirements and modern amenities, our community will be able to fully utilise the unique spaces it provides for their diverse range of events and activities, well into the future,” she said.

Ellen Thomas from Martin School of Dance said the Town Hall provides a wonderful area for students to perform, with a full backstage layout, and potential for a larger audience.

"We are very keen to bring back our annual charity concerts here, so our students can feel like superstars, and we can offer support to our local community again," she said.

President of the Maryborough Theatre Company, Harry Lewis-Fitzgerald, said: “‘Upgrading the Lower Town Hall would provide vibrant hub for our theatre company, giving us a home to run engaging workshops, bring people together for fundraisers, and rehearse exciting upcoming productions/events for our community.”

FUN FACTS

  • In 1903, a memorial drinking fountain was erected in front of the building. Designed and made by George Daws, a Melbourne monumental mason, it commemorates Gerald Wilkinson, Maryborough's first war casualty, who was killed in action in 1901 during the Anglo-Boer War.
  • Films were screened at the Town Hall between 1908 and 1967.
  • In 1939 a new entrance foyer for the hall and a Lower Town Hall were constructed, providing much needed public work during the depression.
