The 2025 Energy Breakthrough event generated an estimated $3.9 million boost for the Central Goldfields Shire economy.

EB is the largest and longest-running science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) educational program in Australia.

A report to Council prepared by RM Consulting Group confirms a six per cent increase in entries compared with the previous year, and an estimated attendance of 14,500 people.

Total revenue of $609,378 was higher than forecast.

Mayor Ben Green said Energy Breakthrough is a “fantastic event” which brings the community together and delivers multiple benefits.

"Energy Breakthrough continues to be the crown jewel of our annual events calendar, driving vital economic activity while showcasing Maryborough to thousands of visitors from across Australia,” he said.

“The outstanding collaboration between our local businesses, school communities and dedicated volunteers highlights the incredible spirit and pride of Central Goldfields Shire.

“Energy Breakthrough teaches children the immense value and enjoyment of collaboration and competition for sustained periods of time, and that striving can be fun, so too the interaction with children who are both local and from further afield.”

In other highlights from the report:

  • Nearly $270,000 was spent with local suppliers
  • More than 700 volunteers contributed 2300 hours, representing an equivalent value of $77,000
  • There was strong digital engagement, with 1.73 million social media views
  • The net deficit of $158,351 was $46,027 better than budgeted due to higher revenue through sponsorship and event income.

The report says that community and stakeholder consultation after the successful event showed that only minor refinements were required, but some opportunities had been identified to further strengthen participation, operational coordination and sustainability.

“With strong partnerships, growing sponsorship and ongoing improvements, Energy Breakthrough is well positioned for continued success and growth,” the report says.

“The event continues to demonstrate a strong and balanced delivery model, underpinned by growing sponsorship, consistent participation and strong community support.”
