What is Australia Day?  Australia Day is an opportunity for us as Australians to come together and celebrate being together and being Australian. It is also a day to reflect on our past. A history which began more than 65,000 years ago.

History is written by many people, cultures and nations. We are all authors contributing to the history of the time we live in. The modern history of Australia is extremely young when compared to other countries around the world, only 200 years. We also share in Australia, the history of one of the oldest surviving cultures in the world. What an incredible opportunity and experience. Contemporary Australia is also known as a country with the youngest and most diverse cultures in the world.

A new episode of history was introduced when COVID-19 struck in March 2020. Communities and individuals demonstrated how resilient and compassionate Australians are. A sincere word of thanks to all the leaders and everyday people for a huge effort, managing the crisis and keeping us all safe during the pandemic.

Australia Day should be seen as a day to celebrate our differences and a day of reconciliation, celebrating the contributions of individuals to our greater communities and what it means to be living in Australia today. It is also a day of celebrating the true Australian spirit of helping, giving and supporting. An everyday manifestation of this, is the role played by volunteers in the Central Goldfields Shire community on a daily basis.

It is also a day to share the stories, histories and contribution of all Australians.

Happy Australia Day to you all!
