Remembering Robert Osborne OAM

Central Goldfields Shire Council is saddened to learn of the passing of Robert Osborne OAM, J.P., P.H.F., on Sunday 27 January, 2019.

Mr Osborne served the community for several decades including nearly 20 years as a councillor and three times as mayor for the City of Maryborough between 1978 and 1995.

An esteemed Energy Breakthrough volunteer, Mr Osborne was involved in the first event before continuing to volunteer for the next 27 years. In 2017, Mr Osborne became just the second a Hall of Fame member.

Mr Osborne was a stalwart of the Maryborough Basektball Association for over 50 years, was president on several occasions and has a basketball court named in his honour.

In additional to his local basketball commitments, Mr Osborne was elected as President of the Basketball Victoria Country Council in 1981 and served until 1999.

Mr Osborne also served on many local committees, boards and organisations including Maryborough District Health Service, Maryborough Probus Club, Maryborough Rotary Club, Maryborough’s Carols by Candlelight (which he compered for 26 years), Maryborough Theatre Group and Maryborough Theatre Company.

Mr Osborne was awarded the Order of Australia Medal in 2011 for service to local government and to the community through a range of health, service and sporting organisations.

Central Goldfields Shire Chief Administrator Noel Harvey said the community is in mourning following Mr Osborne’s passing.

“Mr Osborne was well-known in Maryborough and the Central Goldfields Shire for his volunteering and involvement in multiple service clubs, organisations and committees.

“We are certainly the poorer for losing such a well-respected member of our community.”
