Happy belated Australia Day!

We had a great day on Saturday with Maryborough, Dunolly, Talbot, Daisy Hill, Carisbrook and Bealiba hosting their own Australia Day celebrations.

At the official Shire celebrations in Maryborough, we welcomed seven new Australian citizens. As Chief Administrator, this was an honour to oversee.

We also announced our three local Australia Day award winners on Saturday.

Our Citizen of the Year for 2019 went to Dan Leddin who has spent more than 20 years giving back to the Maryborough community.

Dan was integral in the initial set up of local radio station Goldfields FM and spends two days a week teaching local secondary school students about broadcasting and allows them to participate in radio shows.

He has also been a member of the Maryborough Golf Club for the past 22 years where he has been President and Director of Golf.

Our Young Citizen of the Year is Lachlan Steed, who is involved in several local committees and community events.

Lachlan is the President of the Maryborough Theatre Company, a past Queen’s Scout and is a member of Maryborough Relay for Life and the Blue Ribbon Foundation Maryborough Branch.

He has hosted many local events such as Carols by Candlelight, Maryborough Relay for Life, the Shire’s official Australia Day celebrations and Maryborough Arts Society concerts.

Lachlan is also a member of the Energy Breakthrough’s media team where he writes articles on visiting schools and conducts on-camera interviews with participants.

Our final award, Community Award of the Year, went to Daughters of the West.

This was fantastic 10-week program run through Maryborough District Health Service that encouraged 65 local women to take better care of their health and actively engaged them in physical activity.

Congratulations to all of our award winners, new citizens and our award nominees!
