Residents are invited to join the many local Australia Day events on Tuesday 26 January in Talbot, Maryborough, Carisbrook, Dunolly, Bealiba and Daisy Hill.

The Maryborough event will be hosted by Central Goldfields Shire Mayor Cr Chris Meddows-Taylor and will feature the announcement of the 2021 Central Goldfields Shire Australia Day Awards.

Individual Councillors will represent Council at each of the other Australia Day events.

Member for Ripon Louise Staley MP will give a guest address, the Central Goldfields District Girl Guides and 1st Maryborough Scout Group will raise the Australia flag and Nicole Fornal will sing the National Anthem.

A pre-wrapped breakfast will be served from 8.30am with the official proceedings to commence at 9am.

Central Goldfields Shire Mayor Cr Chris Meddows-Taylor said residents were encouraged to attend Australia Day events at townships across the Shire.

“After a challenging 2020 it will be wonderful to see our communities get together and reflect on what it means to be Australian.

“We acknowledge that January can be a difficult time for First Nations People when conversations often focus on our National Identity.

“Indigenous culture dates back more than 80,000 years and it has been a significant struggle over generations for recognition.

“Whilst Indigenous people have great pride in their heritage, Australia Day reminds them of past loss and so it’s important that we as a community be mindful and respectful of this when marking Australia Day.”
