Construction underway on new Skate and Scooter Park
Published on 12 August 2022
Construction of the new Skate and Scooter Park in Maryborough has commenced.
The project is being delivered by Grind Projects, who were awarded the contract for the construction of the new facility following a public tender process. Grind Projects have years of experience and have a high industry experience in the design and construction of skate parks.
The Skate and Scooter Park is being constructed at the Adventure Playground at Princes Park, Maryborough and is expected to be complete by the end of October – weather permitting.
The project is jointly funded by the Victorian Government through the Sports Recreation Victoria – Local Sports Infrastructure Fund - $250,000, Community Bank Avoca, Maryborough and St Arnaud (in partnership with the Maryborough Lions Club) - $40,000 and Council ($395,000).
Central Goldfields Shire Maryborough Ward Councillor Wayne Sproull said it was incredibly exciting to see construction underway.
“The Maryborough Skate and Scooter Park is a Priority Project for Council and was identified after more than 1000 youths signed a petition in 2018 for a new skate park and presented it to Council.
“This facility will not only have broad range of health and wellbeing outcomes for our local community, but it will also be utilised by residents of all ages and abilities in our neighbouring townships.
“We know our community is excited about this project – and the good news is that with work now underway – there isn’t much longer to wait until our community can enjoy this new facility for many years to come.”
Throughout 2019 and 2020, Council held several information and community engagement sessions to determine the skate and scooter park’s design and its preferred location.
Council engaged with skate park design and construction experts Convic who facilitated design sessions with community members. Grind then undertook further community consultation to finalise the design and prepare detailed planning documentation.
The Skate and Scooter Park has been designed to respect the heritage of the site and to accommodate a range of wheeled sports including skateboarding, scooter riding, roller blading and BMX riding.
The design incorporates spectator seating and viewing areas plus shade structures.
It enables passive surveillance for parents and carers from several directions including the adjacent facilities (Adventure Playground and BBQ area).
