Maryborough has wrapped up another successful Energy Breakthrough, which attracted nearly 20,000 visitors to the Central Goldfields Shire.

From Wednesday to Sunday, Princes Park transformed into a hive of activity as 350 teams and 155 schools competed in the Energy Breakthrough.

The award-winning event, which is a joint initiative between Council and the Country Education Project, provides many benefits to the Central Goldfields Shire with $4.95 million being injected into the local economy last year and bringing thousands of visitors to Maryborough and the Shire.

The Energy Breakthrough accounts for 16.5% of the Central Goldfields Shire’s annual tourism.

The award-winning Energy Breakthrough is a wonderful event that inspires students Australia-wide to be creative and innovative, Central Goldfields Shire Administrator Hugh Delahunty said.

“This year, we have hosted yet another successful Energy Breakthrough and I’m looking forward to seeing it grow even more in the future.

“Congratulations to 24-Hour Trial winners, Girton Grammar School, for their thrilling finish and congratulations to all of the participants, organisers and volunteers who helped make the Energy Breakthrough be as successful as it was.”

Country Education Partnership Chair Mike Stephen said that “the educational value that our schools reap by participating in Energy Breakthrough cannot be understated”.

"Not only does it (EB) encourage a passion for science and engineering but our schools consistently tell us what it achieves for their students' self-confidence, team-work and leadership skills.

"I think you'd be hard-pressed finding another school-based event that so effectively makes science fun and exciting, and the Country Education Partnership (CEP) is incredibly proud of its founding role in this wonderful event.”
