Central Goldfields Shire Council’s Active Central Goldfields Recreation and Open Space Strategy 2020-2029 (ROSS) was adopted at a Meeting of Council last night (15/09).

The ROSS provides a clear vision and framework for participation in sport and recreation within the Central Goldfields Shire and will guide Council and community decision making for the next ten years.

Local sporting, recreation and community groups, key organisations and community members played a key role in development of the Strategy through extensive community consultations starting last year. The Draft ROSS was also made available for public comment during July 2020 which resulted in minor changes and overall positive feedback.

The ROSS has three key areas of focus which aim to make more people, more active, more often. The three main areas are:

  • Active places and spaces – making the best use of our tracks, trails and facilities
  • Active clubs, volunteers and recreation sector – partnerships between Council and local clubs and volunteers
  • Active community – increasing opportunities for people of all ages and all abilities to participate in healthy activities

Some of the key projects identified in the ROSS include:

  • Construction of a new Skate and Scooter Park in Princes Park
  • New multi-sport, rectangular fields complex in Maryborough
  • Development of a Princes Park Master Plan
  • Revision of the Walking and Cycling Strategy
  • Development of physically active communities
  • Development of leadership opportunities for young people and women

Central Goldfields Shire Administrator and Chair of the Recreation and Open Space Strategy steering group Hugh Delahunty said it was great to see the ROSS adopted.

“This will be an integral strategic document for the Shire - one that both the community and Council will look to guide planning and decision making over the next ten years.

“The ROSS is the culmination of hundreds of conversations with our local sporting, recreation and community groups, key organisations and residents.

“It will help guide Council and the community toward better recreational outcomes and assist in the delivery of important projects.

“It’s also meant we now have a comprehensive inventory of all of our recreation spaces and reserves and facilities which will help in the delivery of active recreation.”
