Library services in the Central Goldfields Shire are set to receive a boost with the Victorian Government this week announcing $145,000 in funding for the Maryborough Regional Library.

Central Goldfields Shire Council has received the funding as part of the Victorian Government’s Living Libraries Infrastructure Program.

The investment will see the Maryborough Library refurbished and modernised with a new circulation desk and flexible shelving. Fresh paint and carpet will also be delivered as part of the project.

The upgrade will create more room for popular services including children’s programming, school holiday events and senior’s activities.

Central Goldfields Shire Maryborough Ward Councillor Geoff Lovett said it was wonderful to see investment in one of the Shire’s key community facilities.

“These days libraries are more than just a place to borrow books – they are a place where our community can gather, connect and interact and we’re thrilled this funding will mean we can provide additional services and a more welcoming and accessible space for visitors.

“The library is a much-loved community asset regularly used by older members of our community along with the very young.

“I, like many others felt the closure due to COVID as a loss. It is both pleasing to see the library doors open again and this very welcome announcement that will see the space revitalised for many years to come.”

Central Goldfields Shire Coordinator Library Services Maree Stephenson said the Library team were thrilled with the news.

“As a team we are buoyed by the Victorian Government’s investment in rural libraries and excited about what the funding will mean for our service here in Maryborough.

“The funding will freshen up our space and the mobile shelving will allow us to have more flexibility in our programming.”

“Our library provides our community with a welcoming place to visit – it’s cool in summer and warm in winter and our central location makes us accessible to all. Best of all you don’t have to be a member, buy a coffee or be limited by how long you can stay – it is a welcoming space for all to enjoy.”
