VCE Art & Design Exhibition 2021

Kathren Blackwell Untitled #2

It is my pleasure to officially launch the VCE Arts and Design Exhibition for 2021. Once again I want to acknowledge and congratulate students from Maryborough Education Centre and Highview College for the art they have created during this year.  Students have used a wide range of mediums and explored many topics to produce interesting and unique art works.  I want to thank the dedicated art teachers who have supported students over the last two years which have involved numerous lockdowns and periods of home learning.  Congratulations to all involved and we celebrate the creativity of these students and wish them well in their ongoing artistic endeavours.

2021

My initial inspiration for Neuron Tree steamed from my love of Japanese design in links with meaningful artworks. The painting is symbolic of life and function as the neurons in our body make us who we are and allow movements thoughts and memories. I began my process by practicing techniques separate to my final and free handed the background as I had created a muscle memory of the backdrop and neuron on previous preparations. I used an opaque white in the flowers to contrast with the transparent pink. The flowers symbolise the strengthening connections between the neurons, which links to the memory of my grandma and her loss of memory as I wanted to paint in the positive light in remembrance of the good times with her.

Clarice was created from a want for meaningful artwork and to pose the conception that tattoos should be a display of who you are as a person on the outside and having a display of meaningful art. The heart is the focal point of the art as the veins extend from the heart connection the designs to each other creating a cohesive network of designs with several meanings. Each design is representative of a different aspect of meaning in my life through star signs and hopes and/or dreams. I created a majority of these designs with the addition of painter’s tape to protect the surface underneath from the sponge applicator used to create the smooth and stroke free appearance.

Through My Eyes
Pen and Graphite
2021

This collective work is a series of portraits based on celebrities. The artist chose seven portraits as it is half of her favourite number and an odd number. The aim was to capture likeness in her subjects with a graphite and pen aesthetic. The artist used hatching techniques to indicate tones and experimented with loose lines and marks.

Mixed Media (Pen, Watercolours, Watercolour Pencils)
2021

This artwork is based on portraiture and depicts a woman surrounded by nature. It was meant to be a symbolic representation of the artist’s self however it eventuated into main qualities she liked, such as sleeves, favourite colours, water and the floral theme. The artist used hatching techniques with pen (without graphite) and then completed the mixed media artwork with wet-on-wet watercolours techniques and finally with watercolour pencils.

The Taste of Mist is a story of a protagonist that is a detective researching into a murder case is running in circles as the killer is alluding them yet aware of their existence. The detective keeps a journal and documents his experiences, often finding notes that they did not write. Concluding with the detective being outed as the killer themself, as the character suffers from memory loss due to head trauma caused by a tragic childhood event. Set in a messy office, the mise en scéne and lighting helps to resemble the thoughts inside of the characters head, blurry and cluttered. My aim is to provide the audience with a sense of suspense and become intrigued by the plot, sounds and visuals presented in my work.

The music video 5000 Miles focuses on the themes of romance, emotions, and the internal and external struggles of a couple during a long distance relationship. The main message aims to highlight the difficulties and lengths couples in this position go through and how they could try to overcome this. I hope my product makes the audience relate and/or sympathise for certain characters while also taking in the larger message and theme that nothing is impossible and can be overcome.

The story of my PMV follows the journey of a fox, of a chubbier size, developing self-love with the help from a friend, the rabbit. The story is told in a very simplistic way, alongside the simplistic style. I hope my product makes the audience think of themselves and how they may think of their worth towards themselves and those around them. I intend for them to feel empathy for the fox and also for other people they know that might be in a similar situation.

The Kelpie is a mythical creature of Scottish legend. It is said to haunt rivers, streams and swamps, luring unfortunate travellers to their deaths. Their beauty is what makes them so tempting, this is what I have tried to capture in my pieces The Kelpie and Reflection. My love of sketching lead me to working in a digital medium because the process of sketching was made quicker and easier with the ability to save and manipulate my drawings in a different way, as a result I was able to experiment with many different horse sketches before finally deciding on my final two. Using layers in Photoshop was a crucial tool in separating the elements of my work and for creating depth within my piece, I was able to add a greater amount of blur to the trees in the distance as opposed to the trees closer to the viewer.

From a young age, horses have always interested me and have become one of my favourite subject matters in my art. The Kelpie legend intrigued me as they present with the beauty and elegance of a horse however there is an eerie side to them which appealed to me because of the unnatural nature.

My artwork is all about creating fictional characters in a variety of different scenarios. One of these characters is named Beggoth who was created back in my primary school days. I’ve always enjoyed creating backstories, personality and traits to each of my characters and presenting them through my artwork.

I’m always ready to try new things such as watercolour which I use in backgrounds of my artworks. Gouache I use to paint my character’s as it is a lot thicker and more detailed. Fine liner I always add at the end to create more depth and outlining the character.

I want to portray my character in both a portrait or an action scene. In a portrait I wanted to capture how the character was feeling by showing his emotions. In an action scene I wanted to show a character through visual means.

My artworks focus on the emotion joy, specifically where it comes from and how it feels. I became fascinated with it during my journey with depression and trying to heal; after trying to be happy for months I found depression’s real opposite is joy. It’s what makes us feel alive, the thing that makes a moment truly uplifting. It’s so important, but happiness gets all the attention; so, I decided to bring it some.

Through my exploration I’ve found that joy is deeply personal and individual, and we all feel it a little bit differently, which is why I based my artworks on a mix of my interpretation and a survey I sent out online.

My subject matter was mental health. I would like to help educate the world and individuals, about how it looks and feels for someone who is struggling with mental health. I personally have spent all of my high school years struggling with multiple different mental illnesses. I have people around me that do not understand any of it, so through my artworks, I want to help people to see how we view and feel in the world we live in.

Both my artworks were made with gouache and water colour paint. The reason I have used these materials is because I want to bring a calming feel when approaching this serious manner. I was able to use soft lines and smooth texture to make sure I didn’t make it an alarming. As well as the fact I was able to use this material to my best use, as they were what I was most confident in using
